As a military veteran who’s seen proselytizing while on active duty (not evangelizing), who’s going to determine what is evangelizing and what’s proselytizing?

The original, but credulous, story said “court martials and non-judicial punishment” could be decided on “case-by-case” basis. I’m guessing the worst-case-scenario would not be enforced, which is what the DoD is saying in this statement, but the likely case for something like this to be relevant is with promotions and accusations of discrimination.

My opinion is that by the time you’ve gotten into the military you should be old enough to fend off evangelists, but it’s different if that evangelist is your commander/boss.

I’m not sure what the difference between proselytization and evangelizing is… aren’t both trying to make new converts?

In this context one is simply talking about your beliefs while the other is continuing to do so through force or influence after others have chosen not to listen to your message.

Sure, but Christians (especially the Evangelicals) tend to be prescriptive rather than descriptive when talking to anyone else about their beliefs, no matter the context. When a Christian “shares” their beliefs it’s typically with the goal of persuading other people, not “I have this belief or practice and isn’t it historically or anthropologically neat-o.”

In this context that would be evangelizing. If the person they are talking to about their beliefs indicates that they aren’t interested, but the believer continues to push their beliefs then that becomes proselytization. One is free speech, the other is harassment.

Frankly I can’t say it reflects too well on a believer if they are going to say they can’t respect the constitutional rights of others because their religion tells them not to.

I agree.
